TEST

Contaminants & Testing Frequency:

NH DES recommends the following tests every 3 to 5 years, except for bacteria and nitrate testing, which NH DES recommends to be conducted annually.

Water Test Instructions:

If the well has recently been chlorinated, please make sure there are no residual traces of bleach in the water. Bleach will affect the results.

  • Turn on the cold water for 5 to 10 minutes. (use a timer)

  • Remove the aerator screen from the faucet. Be sure to use cloth to prevent scratching if you use plyers to loosen.

  • Turn the water down to a slow, steady stream. Fill both bottles labeled INORGANIC first.

RADON

  • If you have chosen a package that includes radon, remove the cap from the vial and fill very slowly until the water is almost overflowing from the vial. Fill the cap with water and replace the cap and tighten completely. (This will help eliminate air)

  • Turn the radon vial upside down and tap to check for the presence of air. If air is present, just do step 4 again. *The presence of air in the radon vials will lead to inaccurate results.

BACTERIA

  • To collect water for the BACTERIA analysis, turn off the water and disinfect the faucet. A cotton ball with bleach works well. Run the water for an additional 1 minute to flush out any disinfectant.

  • Turn the water back down to a slow, steady stream.  When ready, remove the cover to the sealed and sterile bacteria bottle, containing a tablet, and fill just above the line marked 100mL. PROMPTLY put the cover back on to avoid any bacteria from getting into the container.

  • *Please keep samples cool and on ice until they can be received by the lab. Water test kits must be brought to Granite State Analytical office in North Conway before 3 PM the same day (M - Th) as the collected water sample.
